Remember, to users the operating system practically doesn’t exist – what they really care about are their applications and their persona. When used effectively you will come to see the virtual desktop merely as a “container” for running applications – and the roles and responsibilities of the operating system become increasingly secondary. You could investigate the use of tools such as App-V from Microsoft, Spoon, and InstallFree. There are many different application virtualization vendors out there on the market, and you are by no means restricted to using VMware ThinApp. We are now moving on to a whole other aspect of VDI, and that’s the virtualization not just of operating systems but the applications as well. We’d like to this opportunity to thank Peter Bjork and Peter Von Oven of VMware for their help whilst writing this chapter.
